CV(pdf)

I’m a freelance writer and editor, based in northern England. My clients include the World Economic Forum, World Bank, economics writer Tim Harford, UNICEF, the Bernard van Leer Foundation and Oak Foundation.

The work I do includes books, articles and papers for publication and internal documents. Sometimes I research and write to a brief, sometimes I develop or advise on existing drafts. I work with clients to clarify and structure ideas, and express them appropriately for the target audience.

Many of the projects I work on have an international development flavour, though I also do corporate work. I don't sell myself as an expert in any particular subject area. My expertise is in the ability to master a brief and to craft concise and incisive prose.

I believe writing should be easy to read. Some years ago I was asked to develop a training session in writing and editing skills for non-native English speakers. Here are my seminar notes and worked examples, in the hope that others will find them useful.
